Anyone For Tennis – Prepare To Be Tuned

3 Comments 25 September 2011

With only 15 people at the opening night of Prepare to be Tuned, I was surprised the turnout wasn’t bigger. I had previously seen Anyone For Tennis? at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival where they performed a scrumptiously zingy bite-sized version of Prepared to be Tuned at The Local Taphouse. It only left me hungry for the bigger slice.

Despite the small turn out at their Fringe show, Jase and Doody were very well tuned and giddy with enthusiasm. Decked out in their trademark sweatbands, the Melbourne duo make it clear that tonight is the night they’re going to seduce us by “making love to our ear drums”.

What makes Anyone For Tennis? so appealing is their ability to liberally baste their show with hilarious non-sequiturs. Most notable is The One – what starts out like a break up song ends up being a bit more sci-fi than most love songs. The duo’s themes usually gravitate around how the socially awkward 20-something male interacts with the beautiful female, but they also sing about Pringles, dandelions, menstruation and time portals, which are mixed in with a little determinism for a philosophical kick. The show doesn’t just end at funny songs either. Things get a little sexy too – Doody flashes us his legs!

I feel I’ve done myself a small disservice by seeing them at a previous gig. I’ve over familiarized myself with their material, but I would happily go again – there’s just something wonderfully endearing about Anyone For Tennis?

Perhaps their charm rests on the fact that everyone knows a Jase and/or a Doody, and if they don’t, they are probably a Jase or a Doody. They just really want to make you laugh, but not in a sad, try-hard way at all. Their intense, geeky eagerness remind me of the two really cute but kind of goofy guys from drama class that leave everyone in stitches with their bang on improv skills. Even their endearing little onstage mishaps (like playing the wrong chord) work to their advantage.

Go check them out at the Lithuanian Club with a couple of friends. You will have a fantastic time – and remember to grab a pint of Lithuanian beer!

I’ve seen AFT a few times a while ago. And they’re very entertaining. Not seen them recently – sort of. They were at, & hosted a ‘late show’ at the festival hub. And then were the dj’s for the ‘after shows’ disco. Their enthusiam is infectious – many people were having lots of fun dancing
