Every so often we stumble across something that has the ability to transform the ordinary for us, leaving an experience that will never be forgotten.
Last night watching Polish performers Karbido perform The Table was such an experience for me.
Do you like music? Fond of tables? Whichever part of the world you hail from, it is likely that sitting around a table with your friends or family is one you identify with. Even if you were the person constantly being sent away from it.
If you said yes to either of the above questions, then watching a performance of The Table under the stars in our own State Theatre might just be your cup of really awesome tea.
Karbido mimic the experience of sitting around a table in both a playful and haunting way, using their hands and a variety of other traditional and unusual instruments to transform this ritual into a musical journey that will take the audience from the tribal sounds of both Africa and Australia, through to the modern jazz and trance sounds we use to interpret the nature of human relationships.
(No interpretive dancing though, don’t worry.)
The group finish on a dramatic cinematic scale in an excellent tribute to modern movie tracks and sound effects, which will soon have you imagining Mount Mordor in all its climbable glory (and holding on to your jewellery).
The Table is both a captivating and dramatic performance, which will have you wondering why you didn’t invest in a better table. Or more musically inclined friends.
