Chivalrofl: A Nerd’s Comedy Quest
Reviewed by Alexandra Lekis
Presented by self-proclaimed nerd, Ryan Etherington, Chivalrofl is 50 minutes informatively spent. On the second day of his debut comedy show, this home-grown Adelaide boy from Elizabeth gave the audience an insight into his nerdy life.
Ryan was on stage wearing nerds’ representative uniform: sneans (which Urban Dictionary has defined as “The highly attractive combination of sneakers and jeans”). I could only hope that this attire was a costume for his routine but I suspect it may be his usual choice.
Ryan spent the hour comparing his attempt at wooing girls with something similar to a séance and proving to us that he will never get a girlfriend. Ever. He mixes the nerd with a little be bit of sass as he humorously rips his hometown, Elizabeth, to shreds. Whilst relating his life to Pokémon on more than one occasion and explaining how his mind unintentionally drifts towards…Pokémon, it comes as no surprise that he complains of having an extreme inability to pick up on social cues.
Stand up is tough, so I congratulate this self-confessed geek on having the guts and the gall to put himself out there. Ryan’s stories received chuckles from the audience, plus some uproarious laughter at times, and only a couple of jokes received awkward silence (which, even he admitted, were shabby to begin with).
This Adelaide Fringe Festival, if you want to enjoy a drink at the Crown & Anchor and learn a little about a nerd’s outlook on life, then this is the show for you. *batteries not included*
