Presented by Violet and Veruca, the creation of Brisbane artists Michelle Zahner and Daria Wain, HolePunch is a quirky cabaret which includes a little bit of everything. Attempting to cover as many genres as possible, these four sassy girls sang, danced and stripped on stage. From burlesque to acrobatics, music to comedy, they certainly ticked all of the boxes.
As we filed in, found our seats and waited for the show to start, Daft Punk’s Technologic was trying to pump up the audience for the show. Buy it, use it, break it, fix it, trash it, change it, mail – upgrade it. Then as we continued to wait…Charge it, point it, zoom it, press it, snap it, work it, quick – erase it…it just got annoying. Thankfully the show finally started and we were saved from developing serious migraines.
At Adelaide’s small performance space, Tandanya – Firefly, with a set made only out of painted white cardboard boxes plus three token bottles of Clag glue, a lot was left to the imagination. It was like being in a poorly supplied office; hence the name HolePunch . However, before we became too distracted by the simple set, the gorgeous girls hopped on stage and their enthusiasm was infectious.
A 45 minute performance with a broken photocopier as the focal point in the storyline might not be appealing for many, but let’s be honest…does anything this exciting ever really happen in the workplace? Combining commonplace office antics (which all nine-to-five desk-bound employees can relate to) with lively theatre, these girls brought this potentially boring storyline to life.
Full of saucy sexual innuendos and tongue-in-cheek acts, these girls explored the funny side of office-life. HolePunch perfectly captured the awkward side of employee birthday parties and the futility of secret office crushes. We’ve all been there and we can all relate.
HolePunch is a thousand times more entertaining than a day at the office (even when somebody brings in a cake).
