Fringe World Perth 2013

Hidden Agenda

0 Comments 30 January 2013

As I arrived at the Circus Theatre for Hidden Agenda, my first-ever Fringe World event, knowing little more than what could be found in the festival program about the band with a penchant for light rock, blues, funk and jazz from eras past, I had no idea what to expect.

Entering the Circus Tent, the coloured lights and smoke that filled the tent immediately reminded me of past music events and perfectly set the mood for what was an enjoyable evening listening to some incredible covers.

Performing in the Circus Tent seemed to agree with the band. The two vocalists, Wayne Stanley and Sandra Carr, seemed a lot like ring masters as they commanded the stage like seasoned professionals, guided the audience through a selection of fantastic tunes.

Performing a cover of Van Morrison’s Domino early in the set had the audience eager for more, with Stanley’s cover of the 1965 Tom Jones classic It’s Not Unusual, a huge hit with the crowd.

Their cover of the Etta James hit I Just Want to Make Love to You led by Carr was met with energetic applause, while a cover of Joe Cocker’s You Can Leave Your Hat On demonstrated the strengths of both vocalists.

A cover of Roy Orbinson’s Pretty Woman saw members of the audience jumping to their feet to dance along as the talented band members, playing the trumpet, alto sax, tenor sax, trombone, keyboard, guitar alto sax, tenor sax, trombone, keyboard, guitar, bass guitar and drums filled the space with seriously good music.

Regardless of whether or not the music performed was the audience’s favourite, Hidden Agenda’s mix of talent, professionalism and infectious enthusiasm for performing left the audience incredibly happy indeed.
